| One of the greatest trends in the history of
surgery is the advent of minimally invasive techniques for
the full spectrum of surgery types performed on the human
body.
Minimally Invasive Surgery, also referred to as Laparoscopic
Surgery, means performing the surgery in many cases without
the additional open incisions that had been associated with
open surgery. For patients, this can translate into a lower
risk of infection, faster recovery and less scarring. Because
of the great benefits offered
by such techniques, minimally invasive options challenge
the standard-of-care for many conditions and should always
be considered.
As a champion of minimally invasive procedures,
and the new Medical Director for General Surgery at Celebration
Health, Jay A. Redan, M.D., F.A.C.S.,
performs many kinds of laparoscopic surgeries. Dr. Redan
has 15 years experience in laparoscopic and thoracoscopic
surgery, and has been a pioneer in this field since its
infancy. He has traveled the world teaching and training
people from several countries about the benefits of minimally
invasive surgery. Many of the instruments used in laparoscopic
surgery have been developed with his input and advice.
During Dr. Redan's career, he has developed expertise in
standard and minimally invasive surgery for:
• Adhesions Causing Abdominal Pain
• Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (Heartburn)
• Diseases of the Colon (Cancer and Non-cancer)
• Gallbladder
• Spleen & Stomach
• General Surgery
Additionally, he performs esophageal surgery (food pipe
surgery). One of Dr. Redan's current areas of interest and
teaching is with hand-assisted laparoscopy, where he is
able to introduce a hand into the abdominal cavity to remove
organs safer and in less operative time. Dr. Redan teaches
for several biomedical companies, including Ethicon Endosurgery,
Smith and Nephew, and has proctored innumerable surgeons
throughout the country in laparoscopic surgery techniques.
He has also directed courses through the Society of Laparoendoscopic
Surgeons and SAGES. Learn more
